Valve adjustments are an important part of maintaining any four-stroke engine and should be done at the factory recommended intervals. Ignoring valve adjustment can shorten engine life and reduce performance. Excessive valve wear, wear on rockers, loss of cylinder pressure and reduced engine performance are just a few of the bad things that can happen when valve adjustment is not maintained.

Luckily, armed with a service manual for your bike, and the right tools, just about any home mechanic can perform this task. While it is not possible here to go into all the possible permutations of valve designs and the work necessary to maintain them, a good factory service manual will break down the process into simple steps that just about anyone can perform.

The important part of making this somewhat involved job simple is having the right tools. Luckily, this is where Motion Pro can help you out. The Goal: A racing motorcycle is all about more power and less weight and an exhaust system is the first step towards accomplishing that goal. The ultimate racing exhaust system has no muffler at all, as seen in F1 and MotoGP. In the real world however mufflers are required so the motorcycle does not exceed noise level restrictions. No performance muffler makes more power and has less weight than the tried and proven straight-through perforated core design. This is the reason that race motorcycles use them. And the porous fiber-mineral packing around the perf-core is what makes it a muffler, attenuating the sound output.
The Problem: The packing material around the perf-core becomes brittle after repeated heat cycles, once brittle it loses its ability to dampen sound. Furthermore it eventually brakes down and is blown out by the exhaust gases through the core’s perforations. Periodic repacking of a performance exhaust system is essential to maintain peak power output and eliminate excessive noise. A blown-out muffler loses as much as 50% of the power gain it had when new and the resulting noise generated is offensive and most often, illegal.
The Solution: The new Two Brothers Racing M2R REM muffler is the byproduct of their depth and understanding of a motorcycle performance exhaust system. Honda’s four-spring clutch is a thing of wonder—most Honda CRF450 ownerswonder

what Honda’s engineers were thinking. If you ride hard and put it away wet, odds are that

Honda’s four-spring clutch will not be in good working order by the end of the moto. Most MXA

test riders can get four hours out of the stock CRF450 clutch before it needs

new plates (some get four minutes). That is too often to be forced to replace $80 worth of

clutch plates. So

, MXA decided to solve the problem by installing Hinson’s

innovative Single Spring (SS) clutch. The most significant feature of the Hinson

SS clutch is its single Belleville

washer spring. The Hinson clutch fixes the inherent

problems of the stock four-spring clutch.

STEP 1

Before you remove the clutch cover, stick a screwdriver in the swingarm pivot

hole so that the handle of the screwdriver pushes the rear brake pedal down.

This allows you to access all of the 8mm clutch cover bolts without having to remove

the brake pedal.

STEP 2
With the clutch cover removed, use an 8mm T-handle wrench to remove the four Honda CRF450 clutch bolts on the pressure plate and lift it off. Once you have the pressure plate off, carefully remove the needle bearing, clutch lifter top hat and washer from the center of the hub. Set them aside. Leave the clutch plates in the clutch for now.

STEP 3
Use a hammer and punch to flatten the lock washer that secures the inner hub clutch nut in place. You may need to get a new lock washer, but in most cases the stock washer can be reused.

STEP 4
If you have an air gun or electric impact driver, you can spin the inner hub nut off with a 27mm socket. If you don’t have a power tool, you can use a breaker bar and socket, but you will need to stuff a rag between the clutch basket and engine cases to keep the clutch from spinning. This is why we left the clutch plates in the basket.

STEP 5
Once the inner hub nut is removed, you can lift the complete inner hub off with the clutch plates still installed. Once you have the inner hub off, you can turn it upside-down and dump the clutch plates out. Be sure to remove the washer that was under the inner hub nut and save it.

STEP 6
Slide the Hinson SS clutch inner hub into the basket in place of the stock CRF450 inner hub. There is no need to remove or replace the stock Honda clutch basket, but you should inspect it for notching.

STEP 7
With the Hinson inner hub in place, put the washer back on the output shaft and reinstall the inner hub nut.

STEP 8
The best way to tighten the inner hub nut is with a clutch hub holder. Your local dealer can order one for you, but until then, wedge a rag between the inner hub and basket to hold it in place while you tighten the nut to 65 foot-pounds.

STEP 9
Reinstall the washer, clutch lifter top hat and needle into the shaft in the center of the inner hub.

STEP 10
Put in the new clutch plates. If you have a 2011 CRF450, take out the two Belleville washers and small fiber plate and replace them with one standard plate (for eight fiber plates total).

STEP 11
With the plates installed, put the Hinson SS pressure plate on. Use an awl to align the six bolt holes in the pressure plate to the bolt holes behind the Belleville washer. Once you have the holes lined up, install the six supplied 8mm bolts and tighten them.

STEP 12
The final steps are to put a new O-ring in the clutch cover, install the cover, pull the screwdriver out of the swingarm pivot bolt and add oil (if necessary).

Where do you even start with Ashley Fiolek? First of all, the record books show that she’s the defending 2009 AMA/WMA Women’s Motocross Champion. But that doesn’t even begin to describe what this 19-year-old has accomplished. Single-handedly she’s elevated the entire women’s motocross scene to an unprecedented height. She’s the first woman to ever be on the Honda Red Bull factory MX team. And she looks like she’s just getting started.

A little background: Up until 2009, women’s motocross in the United States was overseen by the WMA—the Women’s Motocross Association. But in 2009 women’s motocross went big-time and officially became part of the AMA Motocross Championship series. Fiolek was already the 2008 champion (a championship she won in her first year as a professional), but 2009 would really put her in the spotlight. And the brighter the light, the more this talented young rider shined.

In 2009 she roared out of the gate, winning the first three rounds in the championship series. By season’s end she’d racked up 10 overall wins, easily winning the championship on her CRF250R. But her biggest challenge came at her last race of the season, at Steel City. Fiolek was looking to wrap up the series when, while running in second place, she crashed and broke her collarbone. And this wasn’t just a crack—the X-rays would show a big break and a substantial bone displacement. This would have sidelined any rider, but Fiolek remounted and continued over jumps, ruts and whoops to finish seventh.  “When I crashed, I knew I had to get back up and keep going,” commented the bandaged Fiolek after the race. “I was in a lot of pain, but I couldn’t let my team or fans down.”  

This alone would have made her the biggest MX story of 2009. But Fiolek’s story is just getting started. Because you need to know this about Fiolek too: She is profoundly deaf, and has been since birth.

Fiolek shrugs off her handicap and will even tell you she’s turned it into an advantage, claiming that since she can’t hear her competitors’ bikes gaining on her, she just has to ride hard, all the time. What guts this champion has, on and off the MX track.

In addition to her back-to-back titles, Filek also won the X Games Women's Moto-X Gold Medal in 2009 and 2010. For 2011 she's back with Team Honda looking forward to

DEARBORN, Mich. – April 12, 2011 – At the age of 17, Brian Deegan left his home in Omaha and headed for Southern California with only the F-150 he drove, a credit card and his dirt bike, dreaming of becoming the next big thing in Motocross. That 1989 Ford truck carried him and his dreams halfway across the country and to an entirely new life – the one he pictured growing up in the heartland. In the 17 years since Deegan has become a recognized innovator of FMX, one of the most decorated X Games athletes and an icon in action sports. He’s not done yet. Deegan is now looking to take that same competitive fire to four-wheel motorsports and again looks to Ford to help him get there.

Deegan’s partnership with Ford Racing announced today will allow him to race Fords in multiple action motorsports platforms, including the Ford Raptor in the Lucas Oil Off Road Series, Global RallyCross Championship and at X Games 17 in Los Angeles.

“I’m a Ford guy – always have been – and I’m really excited about working together. In order to be successful as a racer I need to be with the best,” Deegan said. “When you think of racing, especially off-road truck, Ford has dominated, and there is nothing I’d rather be behind the wheel of.”

Deegan, who earned the nickname “The General” after founding the famed Metal Mulisha dirt bike team, has established himself as one of action sports’ cultural icons. Credited as the creator of FMX and an action sports pioneer, Deegan parlayed that success into becoming an influential cultural and lifestyle voice through the Metal Mulisha line of clothing, apparel and lifestyle products. Deegan has been nominated for an ESPY Award, has been recognized as one of the Top 100 Athletes of Action Sports and is a 12-time X Game medalist.

A rising star in the Lucas Oil Off Road Series racing a Ford F-150 truck, Deegan won the Championship in 2009 and was named Lucas Oil Driver of the Year in 2010. Accustomed to the spotlight at X Games, Deegan has tackled the rally competition in a Ford Fiesta the last two years. In 2010 he won a pair of silver medals at the LA Coliseum.
“One thing I am used to is riding dirt bikes,” Deegan said. “I grew up doing it ever since I was eight years old and I feel comfortable there. I went out and won a lot of medals and (then) won at supercross.”

“However there comes a time in your life where you’re like ‘have I done it all, or do I want to take on the next chapter?’ and I saw four-wheels as the next chapter. When the opportunity came through Rockstar and Ford to race rally car at X Games , I was like ‘It sounds pretty cool and I am going to go for it.’ For an athlete who comes from the top of the game to start at the bottom again, it isn’t easy. You have to kill your ego and your confidence is back to where you have to start over and try to learn this as fast as possible. I feel like my technique from dirt bikes and learning how to be the best at a sport has carried over.”

As part of the agreement, Deegan will begin running in the Global RallyCross Championship as his Lucas Oil schedule allows. He was in attendance at the GRC kickoff at Irwindale Speedway in late March as a spectator and will be in the Ford Fiesta the Global RallyCross Championship event at Pikes Peak International Raceway and again at X Games.

What is the AIR4ORCE?

The AIR4ORCE is a tunable intake system via interchangeable velocity stacks.

What does it do?

The AIR4ORCE tunable intake system allows the user to now change the power characteristics to suit track conditions and rider preference.

What can I expect after installing the AIR4ORCE tunable intake system?

Depending on the chosen velocity stack installed in the AIR4ORCE you will gain better throttle response and bottom and mid-range power (with longer velocity stack), or better throttle response and mid-range to top (with the shorter velocity stack installed).

What is a velocity stack?

A velocity stack is a device of differing lengths which is fitted to the air entry of an engine's intake system, carburetor or fuel injection. It is designed to:

1.Allow smooth and even entry of air at high velocities into the intake tract with the flow stream adhering to the pipe walls.

2.Modify the dynamic tuning range of the intake tract by functioning as a resonating pipe which can adjust the frequency of pressure pulses, based on its length, within the tract.

Will other velocity stacks be available in the future?

Absolutely. As we continue to work closely with the Factory race teams we will develop model specific "race spec" velocity stacks that will be available in addition to the two velocity stacks included with each AIR4ORCE tunable intake system.

What is involved with installing the AIR4ORCE?

Remove subframe (using directions provided in your motorcycle manufacturer's owners manual), remove rubber boot between airbox and carburetor throttle body, and replace with the AIR4ORCE.

Why did Moto Tassinari feel this was needed on modern four-stroke motorcycles?

When Moto Tassinari begin focusing on four-stroke motors for our next product, we knew one thing for sure. We did not want to add to the already saturated market of gimmick type products, that are truly questionable in regards to how much performance they offer. We knew we wanted build on our solid reputation of the VForce3 and create a product that actually makes an improvement in power, throttle response and ridability. So we chose to stick with what we know, air intake, and that is how the AIR4ORCE was born. It's been a solid two years in development and is now ready for the marketplace after countless hours of dyno and field testing as well as being tested by the likes of John Dowd.

When will the AIR4ORCE tunable intake system be available?

Select models of the AIR4ORCE will begin shipping in mid to late Summer 2010.

Welcome to the 2011 season at Washougal MX Park

Our first event is a practice Saturday April 9 and round #1 of our Hi-Pt series Sunday April 10. This is also a Gold Star event. The gates open on Friday at 6pm and are open until 10pm and open again Saturday morning at 7am until 10 pm. Sign up for practice Saturday starts at 7am, organized practice from 9a-4pm. The gates open Sunday at 6:45 am.and racing starts at 10am. All riders welcome both days!!

This year all classes will be receiving Hi-Point trophies and awards as long as they attend at least 80% of the listed Hi-Point events.

Beginners: if winning or being in the top of their class will be moved up to Junior taking half their points with them, not to exceed someone already in 1st. place.
